We always thought we were prepared for anything. Then Robert had his stroke- and we learned we were not prepared at all. When we rushed to the emergency room, it was night- hospital staff gone, family and friends asleep. We were alone to manage the chaos of paperwork and tests. Fortunately, there were no immediate stroke complications. Robert was released the next day. But we knew we needed help. Where could we find 24/7 support for future medical needs? We found our solution when we contracted with Geriatric Resources (GR). GR is a care management organization providing us with regular wellness visits, care co-ordination, advocacy and help with ongoing medical needs. Now we are indeed prepared for anything. Although our mother had many friends in Phoenix, we live long distance, so she needed an in-town voice, listening ear, and advocate when she needed care and we could not be there. Geriatric Resources, LLC was such a tremendous resource to us. Crystal and her team were so professional and responsive when our our mother was in rehab. Their knowledge, understanding, and compassion were exceptional. Mom needed to call on them many times at off hours so we particularly appreciated the 24/7 on-call service. Our parents found themselves in Phoenix alone and far away from any family. As they started to decline, they found themselves alone and making very poor decisions. With children and grandchildren of our own, none of us were able to travel constantly to Phoenix to assist them. We stumbled upon Geriatric Resources and what a blessing. They helped us gain a clear picture of the situation, and eventually worked with our parents to facilitate a move closer to family. Our situation was going from bad to worse quickly and our parents were not willing to cooperate with "the kids" to start. Geriatric Resources came in and gained our parents trust, so it didn't feel like the kids were giving ultimatums. Yes, it is expensive, and worth every single penny we spent.
